Fall-Proofing Your Home: A September Guide to Staying Safe and Independent

 In Lifestyle, Mobility Aids, Pharmacy

Older adult couple at home in their living room. A woman sits on the couch holding a tablet, with a cane resting against the armrest. A man in a wheelchair beside her reads an open book. September marks two things at once: the changing season and, fittingly, both Healthy Aging Month and Falls Prevention Awareness Day (September 22). At Carmichael’s, we see the connection between them every day.

A strong, steady home is often the difference between staying independent and a trip to the ER. Here’s what our local pharmacists and durable medical equipment staff want our neighbors to know this month.

Falls Are Common, But Not Inevitable

One in four adults over 65 falls each year, and falls remain the leading cause of injury among older adults. The good news is most falls are preventable with a few practical changes. We put together a quick home walkthrough you can do this weekend:

  • Bathrooms: Add grab bars near the toilet and shower, and a non-slip mat inside the tub.
  • A raised toilet seat can make a bigger difference than people expect.
  • Stairs and hallways: Make sure handrails are secure on both sides where possible, and keep pathways clear of cords, rugs, and clutter.
  • Lighting: Nightlights in hallways and bathrooms reduce the number one cause of nighttime falls—simply not seeing tripping hazards.
  • Footwear: Swap slippers for shoes with real tread, even at home.

If a walker, cane, or rollator has been “on the list” for a while, September is a good nudge. Our friendly staff members can help you find the right one for how you walk and get around your home.

Flu Season Starts Now

September is also a good time to get your annual shot at Carmichael’s Retail Pharmacy in Crowley. Getting vaccinated early gives your body time to build protection before flu activity typically peaks in your community. This is especially important if you’re caring for a parent, managing a chronic condition, or simply want to avoid missing work. Walk-ins are always welcome, and most insurance plans cover the shot at no out-of-pocket cost.

A Note on Healthy Aging

Healthy Aging Month is more than just learning how to avoid falls. This annual observance is about staying engaged in the things that matter. That might mean a medication check-in. If you’re juggling multiple prescriptions, ask one of our pharmacists any questions if you have any concerns about interactions. You could also do a blood pressure check regularly at home. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is exactly why routine checks matter. Home blood pressure monitors are available at the pharmacy.

Carmichael’s has been part of southwest Louisiana since September 1969, and we’ve helped a lot of families keep a parent safe at home, stay ahead of flu season, make aging feel less like a series of problems to solve and more like a life to keep living well. We carry both prescriptions and home medical equipment under one company—Carmichael’s Pharmacy & Home Medical Equipment. That means fewer stops, more answers, and a local team that already knows your name. We’re here Monday through Saturday, and no question is too small.
