Kid’s ENT Health Month

 In Pharmacy, Uncategorized

The American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery observes February as Kid’s ENT Health Month and promotes awareness about pediatric ear, nose and throat disorders. According to ent.org, national health statistics reveal that pediatric ear, nose, and throat disorders remain among the primary reasons children visit a physician, with ear infections ranking as the number one reason for an appointment. Typical ENT problems in children including ear infections, common colds and snoring.

Common Colds and Ear Infections

Common colds occur year-round with symptoms that include runny nose, cough, nasal congestion, sneezing, sore throat and more. Over-the-counter medications may relieve symptoms. A trip to the doctor is recommended if these symptoms last for about a week.

The sinus drainage systems in young children are not fully developed, making it easier for ear infections to occur. If discomfort caused by infection is mild, over-the-counter pain relievers and warm compresses at home may help. However, ear infections usually require a visit to the doctor since they are often painful and can worsen if not treated.

Loud Breathing, Snoring and Nosebleeds

Loud breathing or snoring may occur when a child has allergies, a cold, or other minor illness. If either happens consistently, or the child experiences new symptoms, visit a pediatrician. Dry air, such as indoor air during the winter, colds and allergies also can cause nosebleeds. Visit a doctor if nosebleeds occur often or do not subside when they happen.
