Hormone Therapy
Did you know that millions of women are affected by hormone imbalance associated with menopause? Symptoms include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Sometimes, conditions like osteoporosis (bone loss) can form. Although menopause symptoms can be very uncomfortable, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is most often prescribed as treatment.
What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?
HRT uses the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Doctors can prescribe it during or after menopause. Your hormone levels decrease after your period stops, but HRT replaces hormones your body no longer makes. Estrogen is often prescribed along with progesterone or progestin (progesterone-like medication) for women who haven’t had their uterus removed. A low dose of estrogen alone is typically suggested for women who have had their uterus removed due to a hysterectomy.
Which HRT Treatment is right for me?
HRT comes with several benefits and risks just like other treatments, so it’s important to begin with the precise dose to meet your prescription needs. Clinicians recommend an individualized plan for each woman because therapy needs vary. Carmichael’s Compounding Pharmacy prepares medications customized to meet the needs of each individual patient. Our Compounding Pharmacy has Pharmacists on staff who are certified HRT Specialists and work with the patient and prescribing doctor.
HRT is available in several forms:
- cream
- gel
- injection
- patch
- oral tablet
- suppository
- vaginal ring
