According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 13.2 percent men aged 18 and over are in fair or poor health; 13.1 percent of men aged 18 and over currently smoke cigarettes; and the leading causes of death for men include heart disease and cancer. Here are some tips to take control of your overall health:

• Consult your doctor or healthcare professional about having an annual physical or wellness visit.
• Monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and weight.
• Eat a healthy diet that includes fruits, high-fiber and lean protein foods, vegetables, and whole grains.
• Limit foods high in saturated and trans fats, added sugar and sodium.

• Be active. Any activity is better than no activity. You can stay motivated by choosing physical activities you enjoy.
• Quit smoking and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
• Do not drink alcohol or drink in moderation by limiting intake to 2 drinks or less in a day, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
• Manage and reduce stress to lower your risk of serious health problems and depression.
