Respiratory Therapy for Lung Diseases
Two of the most common lung diseases are Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma. They affect the respiratory system and can be life threatening, but a better quality of life can be achieved when treatment and care are followed properly.
It is estimated that COPD, has affected the lungs of more than 12 million American adults. It is a term that is used to describe two diseases that affect the lungs, which are chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Permanent airway obstruction is the result, and the reduced airflow decreases the lung’s ability to deliver oxygen to the body and to remove carbon dioxide waste.
There are approximately more than 24 million American adults and children living with asthma. This lung disease occurs in the airways of the lungs known as the bronchial tubes. The muscles surrounding the airways may tighten up from allergens, environmental causes, or infections. The tightening makes it difficult to breathe. Asthma can occur at any age, but many people develop it during childhood.
COPD treatment includes long term home oxygen therapy that is based on a prescription for oxygen therapy written by a physician. Carmichael’s representatives coordinate the prescribed therapy with the patient’s physician and train the patient and caregiver in the correct usage of portable oxygen cylinders and related equipment. Asthma treatment includes prescribed inhalation drugs, nebulizers, and oral and combination medications. Carmichael’s Pharmacists work with the patient and the patient’s prescribing doctor to ensure the correct prescription is administered.
