Why Should I Get a Flu Shot?
The flu can cause many complications including bronchitis, ear and sinus infections — and possibly worsen other chronic medical conditions. Getting a seasonal flu shot helps protect you and the people around you from the flu. Flu vaccination reduces flu illnesses and prevents serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization and death.
Who Should Get a Flu Shot?
The CDC recommends everyone six months and older get vaccinated against the flu. Flu vaccinations help protect those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness such as children younger than five, pregnant women, older people, and those with chronic health conditions.
People who should not get a flu shot include children younger than six months, anyone who has a severe egg allergy or is allergic to any vaccine ingredient. People who have had Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS) should not get a flu vaccine. Anyone who is feeling ill or those who have had a severe reaction to a previous dose of flu vaccine should not get a flu shot.
Can a Flu Shot Give Me the Flu?
The flu shot will not give you the flu. However, some people may experience minor side effects such as redness, soreness or swelling in the area where they received the shot, low-grade fever, and body aches. Side effects usually go away within 1-2 days. If they last longer, contact your doctor and a Pharmacist at Carmichael’s Retail Pharmacy in Crowley.
The flu shot also does not increase the risk of becoming sick from other respiratory viruses. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against infection.
How Much Does a Flu Shot Cost?
