Did you know that poor footwear can cause serious problems for people who have diabetes such as infections, foot ulcers and amputation? Nerve damage (neuropathy), which causes loss of feeling in the feet, and poor circulation that makes wound healing difficult also can result. Foot deformities, such as bunions or hammertoes, can form, too. Carmichael’s recommends that all diabetics check their feet daily for blisters, cuts, ingrown toenails, redness, sores, swelling and other changes. Besides examining the feet routinely, following safety measures, getting periodic foot exams and controlling blood sugar levels, wearing proper footwear also is crucial.
Diabetic shoes decrease the chance of foot sores (ulcers). They are made with protective inserts and soft shoe materials to accommodate conditions caused by diabetes. Some therapeutic shoes require a prescription and have to be custom made. It is also encouraged that these shoes be worn regularly. Carmichael’s has a Certified Therapeutic Shoe Fitter on staff to help meet the needs of patients living with diabetes. We have a great selection of top quality diabetic shoes to choose from.
If you’re worried about cost, “Medicare Part B will cover the furnishing and fitting of either one pair of custom-molded shoes and inserts or one pair of extra-depth shoes each calendar year.” According to medicare.gov, Medicare additionally covers 2 pairs of inserts each calendar year for custom-molded shoes and 3 pairs of inserts each calendar year for extra-depth shoes. Medicare will cover shoe modifications instead of inserts. It’s important to note that Medicare will only cover therapeutic shoes if your doctor and supplier are enrolled in Medicare. Contact one of our specialists at any Carmichael’s location to find out more about your coverage and let our Certified Therapeutic Shoe Fitter help you choose the right diabetic shoes.
